Most golf instructors, with few exceptions, all agree that obtaining the perfect golf swing is a myth. All you need to do is take a look at the variety of different swings on the PGA and LPGA tours that take place every weekend on television. Although the swings may look different, however they do have some common elements. First of all, they start with very good basics: Grip, Aim and swing. But most importantly, the swing repeats itself each time. There are several players who have repeated success on tours with funny looking swings. This is because the swings repeat its self each time as a result of constant practice. Plus, the golfers have confidence that their swing will work well.
The golf swing can be simple at times, but it is often complicated by thinking too much about the swing. A good golf swing will start with good rhythm. A person can't make a good forward swing unless they take their time going back to set up proper rhythm and motion. A swing that is too fast back, usually will result with the club and body working against each other, and this creates poor shots. The objective of the golf swing is to create speed on the downswing - not the back swing. A backswing that is too fast will create bad motion and will cause the a hands dominate the swing, this will make it hard to repeat a perfect swing. Taking the club slowly will result in a better motion and rhythm. The backswing sets up the downswing, and we will discuss this first.
A good backswing initially starts with the arms and not the hands. You don't want to pick the club up at the takeaway. You want to draw the club away in a one-piece motion that is natural. When the club is drawn back, the left shoulder and hips should turn naturally, this will cause a persons body weight to transfer to the right side of the body. The hands should settle at waist high level. As the club continues to the top, the shoulders should turn. At the top it is important to have your hands set but not broken down. Over swinging at the top will cause a negative club speed and create inconsistent swings.
Now that we've have discussed the backswing, let's talk about the downswing. The whole objective of the downswing is to return the clubhead to the ball with a maximum controllable speed. Just as too fast of a backswing is no good, too hard of a downswing can cause poor golf shots. There are allot theories on the downswing. Most players that think about pulling with their left arm from the top, create a more consistent swing because all of their body parts are working together. Most players trying to imitate tour players tend to try to lead the downswing with the left side of their body, this results in a slide before impacting the bal and causes a weak slicing shot.
To complete the golf swing you need to have a good finish. The finish in the swing, unlike baseball, needs to be high, not left. Most beginners find it more natural to finish low and left this causes topped shots and makes it difficult to get the ball airborne. The clubface needs to remain square for several inches after impact to create proper ball flight. In the finish the weight that you transferred to the right side during the backswing needs to be transferred back to the left side. With a good finish your right knee will face the target, with the right foot facing up so that all spikes are visible, and your hands will be high and close to your left ear.
