Putts as well as short shots need to be played without using a lot of body movement, but most of the other shots that are involved in golf will require the player to use different variants of the full golf swing.
The full golf swing requires a complex rotation of the upper-body that is aimed at accelerating the club head to great speeds. For right-handed golfers, this swing consists of a back swing that is primarily directed to the right, or this can be accomplished with a downswing to the left , with a follow through. At the address, a player should stand with their left shoulder, and hip pointing in the direction that they want the ball to fly in. The golf club is held with both hands, and the club head should rest on the ground behind the ball. The golfers hips and knees should be somewhat flexed, with the arms hanging from the shoulders. A back swing is accomplished by rotating the body to the right, this causes the player's body weight to shift to their right side. This can be accomplished by rotating the pelvis and shoulders, and lifting the arms, wail flexing the elbows and wrists. When the back swing has been completed the hands will above the right shoulder, and the club should be pointing in the direction the player intended to hit the ball. The downswing is basically a back swing that has been reversed.
The full golf swing is a highly unnatural, and complex body motion that is extremely difficult for most players to learn. Its not uncommon for beginners to spend several months learning the basics of swinging a golf club before stepping onto the course for the first time. The correct swinging techinique can be a very difficult skill to acquire without professional assistance and instruction. Even highly skilled golfers sometimes continue to take swinging lessons for many years. Golfers can purchase training aids to help aid them in improving their swing, but some of these aids can run upwards of as much as $50,000.
It is interesting to note that very few golfers will play left-handed, even players who are left handed by nature seem to prefer the right-handed golf swing. Golfers that are right-handed, but hold the club in their left-hand are said to be "cack-handed". It is very difficult to maintain the same consistency, and power in the swing using this arrangement.
Aside from the physical aspects of the golf swing, the mental aspects of the swing may also contribute to its difficulty. Knowledge of this sometimes puts a great deal of psychological pressure on the player. Even professional golfers sometimes have trouble succumbing to this psychological pressure, sometimes they come down with what is has been termed the "yips", this is a severe putting disorder that is caused by uncontrolled muscle spasms in the arms, and results in a jerking motion during the follow through of a putt, causing the ball to roll much farther than desired.
A golf ball will acquire spin when it is hit. A Backspin is imparted for almost every shot as a result of the club's loft. A spinning ball deforms the flow of air around it. This in-turn will cause the ball to take on an upward force of motion that makes it fly higher and longer than a ball without backspin. The amount of backspin that is put on a ball also has an influence on the balls behavior when it impacts the ground. A ball with just a little bit of a backspin on it will usually roll out a few yards on impact, while a ball with a lot of backspin might not roll at all. Sidespin's occur when the club face is not properly aligned perpendicularly to the plane of swing. A sidespin will make the ball curve to left or right: the name of a curve to the left is a draw, and a curve to the right is called a fade. Accomplished golfers will purposely use a sidespin to direct their ball around obstacle on the course, or use it to direct the ball towards the safe side of a fairway or green. A sidespin can sometimes be difficult to control or predict due to the amount of spin that is put on a ball.
