Golf Clubs - Learn about the Types of Clubs

Today there is a mind-blowing amount of equipment that golfers have to choose from, and because of this it is much harder for golfers-especially amateurs-to know which products will best meet their individual game needs. Golfers who play the game using golf clubs that don't meet their individual needs and experience tend to have poor scores and don't seem to fully enjoy the game.

According to the rules of golf a player is not allowed to carry more than fourteen clubs during a game. This is why most of today's players don't carry more than the maximum number of clubs that are permitted. There four different types of golf clubs: Woods, Irons, Wedges, and Putters.

Woods as a rule, are generally used to hit long shots. Standard woods that are commonly carried in a golf bag are 1, 3, and 5 Woods. A 1 Wood is referred to as the 'driver'. As the number increases (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9) the amount of distance a ball will travel when its hit is lost, however a higher trajectory is gained. modern golf club technology has made higher lofted woods for shorter distances. A golfer's bag should have at least one driver (1 wood) and a couple of fairway woods (3- and/or 5-wood). A driver is the longest club in the bag, and because of its length it is usually the toughest club to handle during a swing.

Iron clubs are commonly used for shots that are expected to go an average distance - typically 125 to 200 yards. The lower the number of the iron, the farther the ball will travel. However on the other hand, if an iron with a high number is used, the ball will travel a shorter distance when it is hit.

An Iron has a thin clubhead with grooves on it. Experienced players prefer to use a blade style iron, and beginners, a cavity-back style. A blade-style iron will have a clubhead with a full back, and an iron with a cavity-back style clubhead will be hollow. It is hollowed out to make a perimeter weighting effect that helpful for the less-experienced golfer.

Irons that are categorized as long are (1, 2, 3,4), mid- (5,6,7) and short irons are (8,9). Short irons are the easiest to use, and the long ones are the hardest. The shorter the iron is, the more loft there is to the shot, and for the beginner, the more loft there is, the better.

The most popular irons that are used today are 3 and 9 Irons, most companies also manufacture 1 and 10 Irons.

Wedges are used for mid-range shots, and they are used for chipping, and sand shots. There are numerous types of Wedges, they include sand wedges, pitching wedges, and lob wedges. These are iron clubs that are used for games that are played on difficult grounds, and they are used for approach shots to the green.

A putter is a golf club with a low loft. This feature enables a golf ball to roll farther. A putter is generally shorter than all of the other golf clubs. Putters are the clubs most commonly used in the game and come in clubhead styles of blade, heel-toe and the mallet. Lengths consist of belly putters, standard and broomstick putters. The selection and style that is chosen is based on individual preference.

A popular golf club that is being used nowadays is the Hybrid club. The Hybrid club is a mixture of the Iron and the Wood, and it is manufactured for people that experience difficulty using these other types of clubs.
